KALTURA

What is Kaltura?

Kaltura is an interactive video platform for students, teachers and support staff that allows media (video, audio photo) to be streamed, giving the ability to share media in a variety of ways. Media can be played instantly without having to be downloaded.

Where can I find Kaltura?

Within the UvA, you can work with Kaltura in two different environments:

Kaltura video portal - video.uva.nl

At https://video.uva.nl/  you can view, publish, create and share media.
The video platform is similar to YouTube but there are substantial differences:

  • The content is managed by the UvA.
  • It is intended for education-related topics related to UvA.
  • Additional tools are offered for recording own material in an easy way
  • It is possible to collaborate and share knowledge with students and teachers.

Common use cases

  • Videos can be made public (unlisted) so they can be viewed outside the UvA.
  • Teachers and students have the possibility to publish videos in their own channel.
  • Teachers and students can create playlists to share.

Kaltura via Canvas

By integrating Kaltura into Canvas, you have the ability to post, edit and share media with others within Canvas. Log in to https://canvas.uva.nl/ to work with Kaltura in Canvas..
There are 4 ways to use Kaltura in Canvas:

  • In a personal media collection: My Media
  • In any spot in a course where the content editor shows you the Share- or Submit video button.
  • In a course specific collection: Media Gallery
  • As a course module item by embedding it via External Tool.

See the section Kaltura in Canvas for a more detailed description.

Common use cases

  • Videos are submitted by students for video assignments.
  • Teacher posts knowledge clips in preparation or as an addition for their classes.
  • Teacher uses video quizzes to test students.
  • Students provide feedback on videos practicing, for example, conversation techniques.
  • Assessments are recorded and stored for accreditation.

  6. Avg. Completion Rate - Average percentage of completion across all plays. Example: If a user once watched 20% of the video and the second time watched 80% of the video, the calculation will be (20+80)/2 plays = 50% Avg. Completion Rate.

VIEWS

In this section, you can see the number of views over the duration of the video, understand which sections of the video generated interest, and at which point you lost your audience.

VIDEO PERFORMANCE OVER TIME

To explore performance trends over time, use the graph (shown below) to review key metrics:

image.png

  1. Player Impressions - A player impression event is counted each time the player is loaded on the page.
  2. Plays - A play is counted when a user clicks the Play button to watch a video.
  3. Unique Viewers - Number of Unique Users that had an active viewing action during the time period. Note that Player Impressions are not counted as a viewing action.

You can view the data for each metric in daily or monthly granularity. Hover over any point in the graph to see the detailed data.

You can also compare to another metric by selecting another metric from the drop down list.

To change the time period or filter the data, use the date picker and filter panel at the top of the dashboard. You can also compare data from different time periods.

VIDEO PERFORMANCE METRICS

You can click on View Details at the bottom of the graph to expand a table of all the metrics for the time frame.

ENGAGEMENT FUNNEL

  • Plays
  • Plays that reach <x%> percent play through - You can select the percentage yourself.

TOP COUNTRIES

The Top Countries panel ranks the geographical distribution by plays.

The heatmap shows the countries. The darker the shade of blue, the more plays for that country. The table ranks the countries by plays and also shows plays distribution compared to total number of plays. You can drill down to region by selecting a country on the map or from the table. Select a region to drill down to cities.

DEVICES OVERVIEW

Here you can see the distribution of devices usage by plays, and on which device viewers watched the entry.

TOP DOMAINS

For each domain the following metrics are available:

  • Player Impressions - A player impression event is counted each time the player is loaded on the page.
  • Player Impression Ratio - Number of plays divided by number of impressions.

Why should I add transcriptions or subtitles to my media?

SUBTITLES
Subtitles can improve and enrich the learning process, as they make it possible to:

  • make videos accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers
  • make videos more widely usable for non-native speakers.
  • enrich metadata and search capabilities: it is possible to search within the subtitles.

TRANSCRIPTION

A transcription is a word-for-word representation of what is said in the video/audio file. A transcription can improve and enrich the learning process, as it allows you to:

  • use a transcription for qualitative research in which the content of the speakers needs to be analyzed.
  • not only watch a video but also read the transcription below the video.

How do I generate transcriptions for my video?
  • Go to My Media on video.uva.nl or in Canvas.
  • Open the desired video.
  • Click the three dots below the video, then select Captions & enrich.

  • Set the Source media language to the preferred language.
  • Click on Order.

A transcription of your media will be made with an accuracy of approximately 95%, depending on the audio quality and accent. After the subtitles have been delivered, the requester or co-editor can further refine them manually if needed or modify them into subtitles using the available editor. Once your transcription is generated, you can edit them or transform them into subtitles. For instructions see How do I edit generated transcriptions?

Why should I add an Extended Audio Description (EAD) to my media?

It is possible to add Extended Audio Description (EAD) to media. This feature makes videos more accessible for viewers with visual impairments. Extended Audio Description is an additional spoken narration that describes what is happening visually in a video, such as actions, facial expressions, or important elements within a scene. As a result, viewers who are partially sighted or blind can better follow and understand the content.

When a video contains an Extended Audio Description, viewers can easily activate it via the AD button in the video player.

Once enabled, the additional description will automatically play at the appropriate moments. Watch the video below to see an example:

How do I create an Extended Audio Description (EAD)?

An EAD file is created in VTT format (WebVTT). This is a simple text file in which you describe what is visually happening in the video, linked to specific timestamps. You can create this file using a standard text editor, such as Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac), and save it with the .vtt extension. See an example below:

Example VTT format
WEBVTT

00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:09.000
Een vrouw gaat aan een tafel zitten en pakt een schrift.

00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:16.000
Ze opent het schrift. Een man komt binnenlopen.

00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:24.000
De man gaat naast de vrouw zitten.
  • To upload your VTT file, go to the desired media and click the three dots below the video, followed by Edit.
  • Click on the Accessibility tab.
  • Go to Captions & Extended Audio Description (EAD) and click Upload
  • Choose Extended Audio Description (EAD).

The 'Upload Extended Audio Description (EAD) will load.
  • Upload your .vtt file by clicking Upload
  • Give your EAD a label. This label will appear in the player when the viewer wants to select the EAD.
